The goal is never to stop water, since it always moves downhill, but to guide it on a slow, planned route that protects your foundation and soil rather than an unplanned one that strips both.

Start by walking your property during the next steady rain and watching where water actually goes. Note every spot where it pools, every place it runs fast enough to move soil, and every downspout dumping against the house.
Next, extend your downspouts. Getting roof water at least four to six feet away from the foundation is the cheapest fix with the biggest payoff, and you can do it in an afternoon.
TIP: Lay a level on a straight board pointed out from your foundation and check the drop. If the ground is flat or tilts back toward the house across the first ten feet, that section is feeding water into your basement and needs regrading.
WARNING: Never pile soil against your siding or above the top of your foundation wall to chase a slope. Burying that line traps moisture against materials never meant to sit in wet earth and invites rot and structural damage.

Through the year, keep downspout extensions aimed away from the house and clear leaves out of any swale so water keeps moving. Once a year, check that mulch near the foundation has not built up above your grade line, since fresh mulch each season slowly raises the soil and can reverse your slope.
